Scouting Notes

I think Starks can be a helpful matchup defender in the slot, but don’t put him on the jitterbug types. The smaller, quicker guys gave him lots of issues. Alabama wide receiver Germie Bernard cooked him a couple times, and other more explosive slots just got away from him in man coverage. That was the case against Texas’s DeAndre Moore too, who used a twirl route release and a fake stalk block to gain early advantages against Starks and pull away from him down the field.

But against bigger slot receivers and tight ends, Starks did a good job being physical and getting out of the break to stay in their hip pocket. He’s not an explosive mover, but he’s fluid to open and run with receivers, provided they aren’t a true speedster. Starks also has the ability to rise and challenge throws down the field, showing an excellent ability to play with his back to the ball before locating it to make a play. In the first Texas game and in the Clemson game, Starks’s man coverage skill was a massive asset to the Bulldogs defense.
