Scouting Notes
Insane production for a college wide receiver. 39-702-8 as a true freshman, followed by back-to-back 1,300+ yards, 8+ TD seasons.
Moves like the good, not great athletes amongst the best NFL wide receivers, but still good enough that you aren’t worried about him just not being a pro athlete, even after the high 4.5s pro day 40. McMillan doesn’t have the twitch and explosiveness of the top tier wideouts, or the strength of Mike Evans, but he doesn’t look out of place athletically.
The biggest struggle with McMillan is how he separates at the line of scrimmage and at the top of the route. Against zone coverage, McMillan dominated in college, posting eye-popping numbers while getting open on over 94 percent of his targets. His outstanding feel for coverage, awareness/IQ on the field and constant desire to work back to the ball were huge assets in these situations.
But against man coverage, McMillan was only charted as open around 54 percent of the time, good enough for just the 39th percentile. I looked up those numbers only after I’d watched the tape and recognized that McMillan’s struggles with deceleration at the top of his route and twitch at the line of scrimmage might create issues in some of those third down situations when the coverage tightens up.
